FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Fragrant silver leaves keep the animals at bay, while lavender blue flowers put on a show from mid summer into fall. Thrives in full sun and dryer soils and are salt spray and air pollution tolerant. Should be cut down in late winter to early spring to promote new growth.

HABITAT & HARDINESS: Russian Sage, is native to central Asia, including regions in Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Tibet, and surrounding areas. In its native habitat, Russian Sage is found in a variety of environments, including rocky slopes, open woodlands, riparian zones and dry hills.

This species is hardy in USDA Zones 5-9.

PLANT DESCRIPTION: Perovskia atriplicifolia, commonly known as Russian Sage, is a striking and aromatic perennial plant that hails from the steppes of Central Asia. Belonging to the Lamiaceae family, this deciduous subshrub is appreciated for its finely dissected, silver-gray foliage and tall, airy spikes of lavender-blue flowers. Russian Sage typically grows to a height of 3 to 5 feet, creating a visually appealing, wispy presence in the garden. The slender stems and silver leaves give the plant a unique texture and add an ethereal quality to landscapes. Blooming in mid to late summer, the flowers attract pollinators and create a beautiful contrast against the foliage.

CULTURAL & MAINTENANCE NEEDS: Russian Sage thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy to loamy soils. It is drought-tolerant and well-suited to dry and arid conditions, making it an excellent choice for water-wise or xeriscape gardens. The plant’s adaptability extends to various soil types, but it performs best in alkaline soils.

Cultural maintenance is relatively low for Russian Sage, as it is resistant to pests and diseases. Pruning in early spring, before new growth emerges, helps maintain its shape and encourages a bushier form. While Russian Sage can tolerate some neglect, occasional watering during extended dry periods promotes optimal growth and flowering.

LANDSCAPE USES: Cut/Dried Flower Garden; Seaside/Coastal Garden; Butterfly Garden; Pollinator Garden; Naturalizing; Perennial Borders; Water-Wise Landscape/ Xeriscape; Hellstrips; Fragrance Garden; Deer Resistant Plantings; Cottage Garden; Russian Sage is well-suited for sunny borders, where its airy and vertical form adds a touch of elegance and a sense of movement to the landscape. The wispy, aromatic foliage provides a fine texture, creating a soft and ethereal effect in the garden. ‘Blue Spire’ blooms from midsummer into fall, offering a prolonged period of interest and attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. Its drought tolerance and adaptability to poor, well-drained soils make it suitable for xeriscape gardens, while its deer resistance adds to its practical appeal. Whether utilized as a backdrop, in mass plantings, or to create a cottage garden aesthetic, Salvia yangii (formerly Perovskia atriplicifolia) brings both visual allure and resilience to diverse garden landscapes.
