FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Dainty white flowers with creamy yellow centers grace this hybrid goldenrod. Basal foliage of willow-like leaves burst with flowering stems in mid to late summer. ‘Sugar Kisses’ is a sweet Solidago for full sun, reaching a height of 2 feet including flowers. Each flower stem produces a little bouquet of daisy like flowers; which looks more like an aster than goldenrod and is long lasting as a cutflower.
HABITAT & HARDINESS: Solidago h. ‘Sugar Kisses’ is a hybrid plant from the breeding work of Brent Horvath at Intrinsic Perennials. Parentage includes the seed parent of Solidago ptarmicoides and an unknown male Solidago parent. The seed parent, Solidago ptarmicoides, is an upland species that requires good drainage and dry conditions and has white flowers. The other parent grows in wet conditions and has gold petals. The hybridization makes the species very adaptable, tolerating soil moisture levels from dry to wet.
Plants are hardy from USDA Zones 3-9.
PLANT DESCRIPTION: Intrinsic Perennials describes the ‘Sugar Kisses’ as a hybrid of a white upland species and a moist-loving gold species yielding vigorous, adaptable plants. Basal clumps of half-inch wide, clean, strap-like foliage make a nice backdrop. Woody-like stems bolt in summer, starting with lime-yellow buds in clusters. Typically white flowers have creamy yellow centers. Tolerates average to most any soil, but drier leaner soil produce tighter habit, stands up straight 18-24″ tall.
CULTURAL & MAINTENANCE NEEDS: Low maintenance. Deer and rabbit resistant.
LANDSCAPE USES: Pollinator Garden, Low Meadow or Prairie, Rock Gardens, Cut flower Gardens
COMPANION & UNDERSTUDY PLANTS: Great with asters and low grasses.
TRIVIA: Solidago hybrida ‘Sugar Kisses’ looks just as good in bud (limey green to yellow) as in flower and the cut flowers last over a week in a vase.
Every autumn Solidago spp. are wrongfully accused of causing allergies. The goldenrods are insect pollinated and have heavy sticky pollen. The plants that do cause allergies and hayfever have lightweight wind borne pollen that is easily inhaled.
