CHECK AVAILABILITY

First Impression: An evergreen perennial with masses of 5-petaled starry, pink-crimson flowers with dark red centers. The early spring flowers cover the needle-like foliage for nearly a month attracting butterflies to the garden.

Habitat & Hardiness: Phlox subulata ‘Redwings’ is a cultivar so it is not found in the wild. This cultivar is hardy in USDA Zones 3-9.

Plant Description: ‘Red Wings’ has striking pinkish-crimson flowers with a dark red center which blanket the foliage in late spring. It makes a tremendous color impact which can be seen from quite a distance.

Creeping phlox is a low-growing species which forms a carpet-like mat no taller than 6″. This popular little perennial is best utilized in rocky areas, on slopes, and in flower borders. Bristly evergreen foliage mounds gently and creeps to provide cover, while deep pink blooms cover the plant in mid to late spring and attract pollinators. Deer resistant ‘Red Wings’ Creeping Phlox provides an attractive groundcover for fewer weeds, less mowing, and rocky or sloped areas.

Cultural & Maintenance Needs: Prefers full sun (will tolerate dappled shade) and enjoys humus-rich, medium moist, well-drained soils. It thrives in sandy or gravelly soils and is drought tolerant once established. Good drainage is a must.

Landscape Uses: An excellent choice for rocky areas, slopes and borders. This cultivar is also a great addition to rock gardens and a good choice for planting above rock walls. Interplant spring bulbs with this perennial and it will hide the old foliage after the bulbs stop blooming. Be sure to incorporate this into deer-resistant plantings. If Phlox subulata ‘Red Wings’ is not available consider Phlox subulata ‘Emerald Blue’ or Phlox subulata ‘Emerald Pink’ as a substitute. Dianthus ‘Firewitch’, Phlox stolonifera ‘Sherwood Purple’; and Phlox stolonifera all may be good options as substitutes if cultural conditions are suitable.
